Organization as a Lifestyle

It’s the end of the work day on Friday (it’s not yet, but go with me on this) and you’re tired from the week. The first thing you want to do is get home, change into some sweatpants and have a nice glass of iced tea. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

For many of us, the feeling of coming home has a little dread because you know what your house is going to look like when you get there. The breakfast mess might still be out because you were running late after taking your 45 second shower to get to work on time. Or you may have baked a cake for the kid’s school-is-starting-so-let’s-make-the-parents-cook-things bake sale last night and have some mixing bowls in the fridge and a thin coat of flour on every surface in the kitchen.

I know your pain.

When you watch TV, it seems like every time someone enters into a home, it’s nice, clean, and organized, which leads us to believe everyone in Hollywood are savants at home-cleaning. In many cases, our homes would look more like what you’d see on an episode of Cops during a home raid–maybe not that bad, but at least we feel that way about it.

Okay, I get it. I’m a mess. Whaddayagonnado?

Habits are habits, and if you’ve been living the same way for a long time, it’s hard to make your home look like a magazine all the time. But it’s all about your mindset. We are operating at full-speed all day long, we don’t have the time to sit and just think about things; put yourself in the right frame of mind to get organized and clean.

Start with Organizing Your Thoughts.

It sounds silly, perhaps. But everything you do comes starts there. It’s no secret some of the most successful people in history took time to reflect on the day and plan for the next: Winston Churchill, President Theodore Roosevelt, Mother Teresa, and more. These few people referenced before are just a small percentage of those that spent time in the evenings writing about their day and planning for the next. They didn’t always spend a lot of time doing it either, even 10-15 minutes can get you in the right frame of mind.

So remember that Mead Composition book you got for the kiddo a couple years ago and they never used? Go grab it. Write about what you experienced today, and write about what you hope to experience tomorrow. You’ll be amazed how this can help you get organized and feel really great about your accomplishments.

Tackle the Easy Stuff First.

Dump the junk. Organize the cabinet under the sink. Get rid of the old make up and donate those clothes you haven’t worn in over a year. With less stuff laying around, cleaning becomes less of a lofty ambition and more of a casual daily event. Once you tackle the easy stuff you’ll start feeling good and motivated, and eventually you can work up to the garage and the attic where the true nightmares are born.

With a ton of money, anyone can buy the biggest, best organizing or cleaning gadget (or hire someone else to do it for you) but you can get the same results with little to no money.
